85 Years, One Diagnosis, Countless Lessons: A Type 1 Story

Meet Don Ray: A True Type 1 Diabetes Warrior

Imagine being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at a time when treatment options were limited, technology was nonexistent, and the future for people with diabetes was uncertain. That was the reality for Don Ray, who was diagnosed in 1939 at just four years old. Don’s story is one of resilience, determination, and breaking every expectation placed upon him. From the early days of boiling glass syringes to today’s modern CGMs, he has seen and experienced it all. But most importantly, he has lived—and thrived—through it all.

This is his journey.

In 1939, at just four years old, Don Ray’s life took a sudden turn. He was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes—a condition that, at the time, was seen as a near-impossible challenge for a child to manage. Insulin had only been around for a little over a decade, and treatment options were limited. Doctors warned his family of the difficulties ahead, but young Don had a fighting spirit from the start.

Growing up with Type 1 diabetes in the 1940s wasn’t easy. Many believed children with diabetes had to live cautiously, avoiding sports or any physical activity that could lead to complications. But Don was determined to live fully. At age 10, he was finally given permission to participate in sports—a pivotal moment that shaped his outlook on life. From that point forward, diabetes was something he managed, not something that managed him.

Like many others diagnosed in the early days of Type 1 diabetes, Don was told he wouldn’t live past 30. Medical knowledge was still evolving, and long-term survival with the condition was rare. But Don refused to let a number define his future. Instead of dwelling on statistics, he focused on learning how to take care of himself—staying active, managing his insulin, and proving the world wrong, one year at a time.

No one thrives alone, and Don’s journey wouldn’t have been the same without his support system. His family stood by his side through every high and low, celebrating his victories and helping him through the toughest moments. Their unwavering encouragement played a crucial role in his longevity, reinforcing that with the right mindset and support, diabetes didn’t have to be a roadblock.

This year, Don Ray reached a milestone few could have imagined—85 years of living with Type 1 diabetes. Recognized for his resilience and dedication to health, he was honored with an award celebrating his incredible journey. His story is a testament to how far diabetes management has come and how those diagnosed today have more tools and knowledge than ever before.

Now in his 90s, Don Ray continues to embrace life with the same energy and optimism that has carried him through the decades. “I’m gonna hang around here as long as I can,” he says with a smile, looking back on a life filled with challenges, triumphs, and an unshakable spirit.

His message to others living with diabetes is simple yet powerful: "Don’t be afraid, but just beat it. You’re stronger than it is."
